Congratulations to adding a new family member to your home. This will be a fun filled time for you and your family. As you may already know, there are a few things you will need to do to ensure the health of your puppy. Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital has created a plan to help you and your family members ensure your puppies continued health. Puppies need to begin receiving vaccinations against infectious diseases at 8 weeks of age. We give puppies a “4 in 1” DHPP vaccine to protect them against distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. It is necessary to give your puppy a series of vaccines ever three to four weeks until 16 weeks of age. The Rabies vaccine is give at 16 weeks of age. Two fecal tests are done to screen for intestinal parasites.

Other vaccines are available, which are not included in the plans. In the event you plan to board, groom, take your puppy to training classes, or to the dog park, we recommend the bordetella vaccine (commonly known as Kennel Cough).

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. It is found in our area and could pose a threat to your puppy. Iverhart Max is the monthly preventative recommended to prevent heartworm disease. We provide the first month of preventative medication. The medications also include monthly de-wormers for tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms.
